Why gaming ping spikes and how to reduce it on Netfizz

High ping and lag spikes during gaming are almost never caused by your fiber speed. Here is what actually causes them and what you can do.

What causes ping spikes in gaming?

  • Congested home network — someone is streaming 4K or uploading large files at the same time
  • Wi-Fi interference — connecting to a game server over Wi-Fi adds 10–30ms of inherent jitter
  • Distant servers — a 200ms ping to a US server is physically unavoidable regardless of your internet speed
  • Congested ISP route — traffic between your ISP and the game data centre is not optimal

Fix 1 — Connect via ethernet

The single biggest improvement you can make. Wired connections have zero Wi-Fi jitter. Connect your PC or console directly to the router with a Cat-5e or Cat-6 ethernet cable.

Fix 2 — Enable QoS (Quality of Service)

Log into your router at 192.168.1.1, find QoS Settings, and set your gaming device to high priority. This ensures gaming traffic is prioritised over background downloads.

Fix 3 — Select the correct game server region

In your game settings, always select the nearest server region. For India, this is usually Mumbai or Singapore depending on the game.

Fix 4 — Upgrade to Gigabit Pro

Gigabit Pro customers benefit from direct peering with Valve (Steam), Riot Games, and Blizzard networks through our premium backbone routes, resulting in 3–8ms ping to Indian game servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not directly. Ping is determined by latency (distance and routing), not bandwidth. However, Gigabit Pro includes premium routing and direct gaming server peering that reduces ping independently of raw speed.

Under 20ms is excellent. 20-50ms is good. Above 80ms you may notice lag. On Netfizz Gigabit Pro in Mumbai or Delhi, you can expect 5-15ms to Indian Riot and Valve servers.
